The Sony XBA-3 Balanced Armature Headphones are set of earphones / Inner Ear Monitors (IEMs) that generally sound quite good. However, there are a few quirks with the design and sound, and that coupled with the high price point prevent me from calling these one of my favorites.Note that during listening sessions I compared the XBA-3s to other mid to high end earphones such as Atrio Future Sonic MG7 Pro and Logitech Ultimate Ears 700 Noise-Isolating Earphones. These two are my favorite IEMs at this time. Build and fit - good, but some bad design choices IMHO. Though they are pricey and short on trimmings, the Sony XBA-3 in-ear headphones deliver where it matters most: they sound fantastic, competitive with the best headphones available at a similar price.The build quality of the headphones seems excellent; they feel solid and metallic in the hand, though they're not heavy, and they're impressively small (significantly smaller than UE TripleFi 10s, for instance) and good-looking objects. The cable itself is a bit lightweight and flimsy-feeling, but it drapes well and isn't too rigid; the plug is heavy and seems well-made. The only major design issue is the asymmetrical cable -- the right earphone is on perhaps 20" of cord while the left has only around 8", leading to a bit of a strange chin-strap look compared to standard Y-style cabling. (You can avoid this by routing the right headphone's extra cord behind the neck, a better-fitting option that is mentioned nowhere in the documentation.) It would've been really nice if the... They have to compete with customs (JH5 Pros), along with the Westone 3s, Atrio Pro (MG7 driver) and ACS T15. They all sound great to me. What a hobby.Anyway, balanced, just enough bass, treble not suffering from sibilance ... what's not to like. I need to do a comparison with the Westone 3s, apples to apples (in terms of drivers and both being BAs). But I have a feeling I will keep both. With two hours of listening, I can recommend these. They pass the HP tryout mix list test. Only reason not 5 stars because I wanted to give 4.5, not 4 or 5, so err on the side of caution. Update: Well, honesty made me add to my initial feedback. The Sonys were good, very good. But in the end, they really could not unseat my JH5 Pros (dual drivers) or the Westone 3s, for which I have custom sleeves.
